Why I’m Building FreeWill Labs Around Real Family Adventures

A founder letter on why FreeWill Labs is building technology for real family adventures before, during, and after the moment happens.

Why I’m Building FreeWill Labs Around Real Family Adventures

I started FreeWill Labs because of a feeling I kept having on family trips: that the best moments were slipping past while I was busy managing logistics or staring at my phone.

The moment is the point

Most travel technology is built for the edges of a trip — booking it before, and posting about it after. The middle, where the actual family experience happens, gets very little help.

FreeWill Labs is built around that middle. Around the real adventure, as it happens.

Three products, one belief

Everything we build comes back to a single belief: technology should help families experience more of the real world, not pull them away from it.

  • Adventure Quest helps kids engage with the places they visit, turning a walk or a city or a park into shared discovery.
  • Family Trip OS helps the person carrying the trip carry less, so the family can be present instead of scrambling.
  • PaddlePin, still early and in private field testing, helps outdoor moments become both fitness and memory.

Different products, same throughline: be present, together, in real places.

Before, during, and after

I want FreeWill Labs to be useful across the whole arc of a family adventure — preparing for it, living it, and remembering it — without ever becoming the reason someone missed the moment.

Building in the open, honestly

We are small, and we are early. We field-test our own products on real trips, we write honest notes about what we learn, and we build slowly on purpose.

If any of this resonates, the best way to follow along is to use what is live. Adventure Quest is on iPhone today. Family Trip OS is in private early access. PaddlePin is on the water.

Thanks for being here early.
